The Big South presents Brazilian funk legends Banda Black Rio, their unique funked-up fusion sound earned world-wide recognition and has influenced generations.
Banda Black Rio is considered one of the most important bands in Brazilian music history, mixing R&B, funk, jazz, samba and they were one of the first to fuse Brazilian rhythms with international Black music. Formed in 1976, the band's unique and pioneering samba-jazz-funk sound has attracted thousands of worshiping fans across the globe.
They took a break from touring in the mid-80s following the death of founder member Oberdan but were rediscovered in the 90s by DJs such as Gilles Peterson and Norman Jay. Incognito fell in love with their grooves (and covered 'Expresso Madureira') and a host of artists (including Mos Def) have dipped into their catalogue for samples. The resurrection was complete in 2000 when Oberdan's son, William Magalhaes, took the lead and released a new album titled 'Rebirth' which was followed in 2011 by the acclaimed 'Super Nova Samba Funk'.
Also featuring special guest DJ Patrick Forge (Cosmic Jam, Mi-Soul).
